Final Exam Calculator

Enter your current course average and the weight of the final. We tell you the mark you need, because and whether it is still mathematically possible.

The calculation

If your final exam is worth W percent of the course and you currently average C across the other components, then to finish at D you need:

Required = (D − C × (1 − W)) ÷ W

Worked example

You are averaging 72% and the final is worth 40%. To finish at 80%: (80 − 72 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = (80 − 43.2) ÷ 0.4 = 92%. Demanding, but possible.

Now suppose you are averaging 40% with a 30% final and want 85%: (85 − 28) ÷ 0.3 = 190%. Not possible. The tool tells you the maximum you can still reach (in that case 58%) which is far more useful than a number above 100.

Two figures worth knowing

Alongside what you need, this calculator shows your floor (what you finish with if you skip the final entirely) and your ceiling (a perfect final). Together those bound every possible outcome. If the floor already clears your target, you can stop worrying. If the ceiling falls below your minimum pass mark, you know to plan for a retake now rather than after results day.
