Why this one matters

The embassy route is the better-known of the two and carries small per-country quotas, which makes it competitive. What you get in return is placement power: MEXT can assign you to a university you could not realistically approach on your own.

What it covers

Tuition
Full tuition and entrance-exam fees waived
Stipend
Monthly allowance (amount varies by degree level and is periodically revised)
Accommodation
Not directly covered; university dormitories usually available
Insurance
Not covered. Enrolment in National Health Insurance is required.
Travel
Round-trip economy airfare

Requirements

AcademicStrong academic record; varies by track and by the recommending embassy or university
LanguageJapanese or English depending on the programme; many graduate programmes are taught in English
OtherAge limits apply on several tracks and are strictly enforced

How to apply

Apply through the Embassy of Japan or its consulates in your own country. The embassy screens applicants with a written exam and an interview, then recommends a shortlist to MEXT in Tokyo. MEXT places successful candidates at a Japanese university, which can include the most selective ones. You may not apply to both MEXT tracks in the same year.

Application cycles

We keep past cycles rather than deleting them. Historical dates are the best predictor of when the next call opens.

YearStatusOpensDeadlineNote
2027/2028 Closed — — Applications for 2027 entry opened at most embassies around April to June 2026 with country-specific deadlines, commonly mid-May to early June. Written exams followed in July 2026 and primary results in September 2026. This round has closed.
2028/2029 Expected — — The embassy track has run on a stable April-to-June rhythm. Expect the 2028 call around April to June 2027. The Japanese embassy in your country publishes the binding dates and they differ by country, so nothing here should be treated as your deadline.
