The University of Tokyo is Japan's most prestigious national university and a primary destination for MEXT scholarship recipients. Japanese grading uses S/A/B/C letters with a 60% pass mark.
5 grades sit on the scale. Below C the course earns you nothing. Note what is missing. This scale has no D. The gap between a pass and an F is a single grade.
That percentage is the product of a formula, not of a regulation. GPA × 25 (illustrative only; not universal) normalises a 4-point scale, which is a reasonable estimate and nothing more. No UTokyo-issued conversion formula was found.
The thresholds worth memorising: Grade letters runs to S (秀), A (優), B (良), C (可), F (不可). Pass mark is 60%. Main funding route for international students runs to MEXT scholarship (embassy and university recommendation tracks).
Two things remain unverified here. UTokyo grading varies by faculty/programme; official course catalogues show different mark-to-letter rules. A second gap sits below the grade table. Both stay open until an official document closes them.
Check the figure against your own grade report before it matters. Our version follows the written policy. Practice in a faculty office can differ.
| Grade letters | S (秀), A (優), B (良), C (可), F (不可) |
| Pass mark | 60% |
| Main funding route for international students | MEXT scholarship (embassy and university recommendation tracks) |
| CGPA → percentage status | Estimate / normalization only |

Reference model only. UTokyo course catalogues show faculty/course-specific grading patterns; the S/A/B/C/F mapping below is illustrative and must not be treated as a universal UTokyo conversion.
| Grade | Points | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| S | 4.00 | Excellent (秀) |
| A | 3.00 | Very Good (優) |
| B | 2.00 | Good (良) |
| C | 1.00 | Pass (可) |
| F | 0.00 | Fail (不可) |
Both patterns exist in Japan. Some universities treat S as a distinct top grade worth 4.0 with A at 3.0; others map A to 4.0 and use S purely as an honour marker. Check your faculty handbook (履修要項) before converting.
