How CGPA works at IIT Bombay

Your CGPA is a credit-hour weighted average, not a simple average of your semester GPAs. Each course contributes grade points ร— credit hours (its quality points) and your CGPA is the total quality points divided by the total credit hours attempted.

This is why a 4-credit course moves your CGPA roughly four times as much as a 1-credit lab, and why averaging your semester GPAs directly gives the wrong answer whenever your credit load varies between semesters.

IIT Bombay calls the semester average SPI and the cumulative average CPI, both credit-weighted to two decimal places. Grades are letter pairs (AA, AB, BB) rather than single letters, and most courses are graded relative to the cohort, so there is no published percentage table. When a failed course is later cleared, the CPI reflects only the new passing grade. The earlier FR is dropped from the calculation, and a course failed repeatedly still appears only once in both numerator and denominator. Courses taken through NPTEL, SWAYAM or a semester exchange count toward credits but their grades are excluded from the CPI.

PPPass in a pass/fail course. Carries no grade points and is excluded from SPI/CPI.
NPNot passed in a pass/fail course. Excluded from SPI/CPI, but the degree requires a PP.
