Overview

ELTE is Hungary's largest and oldest continuously operating university, and one of the main hosts for Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship students from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The scale in practice

The table runs to 5 grades. The lowest grade carrying points is 1, worth 1 point.

Percentage conversion

The figure below is arithmetic. No policy backs it. Average × 20 (normalization estimate) normalises a 5-point scale, which is a reasonable estimate and nothing more. No ELTE-issued conversion formula was found.

Rules that decide your degree

These are the rules that matter once you are past the table. Grading scale runs to 1 – 5, where 5 is best and 1 is a fail. Pass mark is 2 (elégséges). Credit system runs to ECTS.

What we have not verified

Two things remain unverified here. ELTE's five-point grading scale is clear, but credit-index details and programme-specific regulations are not fully represented here. A second gap sits below the grade table. Both stay open until an official document closes them.

Before you rely on this

Each intake can bring different rules. If your transcript disagrees with the 5-grade table above, your transcript wins, and we would rather re-read the source than argue with it.

Known gaps in our data for this university:
  • ELTE's five-point grading scale is clear, but credit-index details and programme-specific regulations are not fully represented here.
  • No official 5-to-4.0 or 5-to-100 conversion formula was verified.

We publish these openly rather than filling them with guesses. Help us close one.

Grading scale

Hungary uses a five-point scale where 5 is best and 1 is a fail. Hungarian institutions typically report both a simple average (átlag) and a credit-weighted index (kreditindex).

Common questions

How does a Hungarian 5-point average map to a 4.0 GPA?

There is no official mapping. Institutions receiving your transcript will usually apply their own conversion, and credential evaluators often use the modified Bavarian formula. Report your Hungarian average as-is and let the receiving institution convert it.
